Casey, the eldest son of Judy and Lyle Brown, died suddenly in an automobile accident in Hamiota on May 1st, 2011, leaving a huge void in his family and the horse world.
The Brown family teamed up with Sparks Oilfield Services, Casey’s former employer, to initiate the award.
Casey grew up in the rodeo circles, and eventually honed his skills to where he was a regular on the rodeo trail for many years. He competed primarily in calf roping and team roping, and dabbled in steer wrestling once in a while. Casey mainly heeled throughout his rodeo career. Over the years he shared success with many different partners, most notably his dad Lyle, whom he started out with. Mike Pernarowski and Kevin McCannell were also partners that Casey travelled with and qualified for the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association Finals several times.
When the bounty originally started, the arena record was held by Casey’s younger brothers, Lonnie and Shane, with a time of 4.6 seconds set in 2007. In 2014, the award was won for the first time. A time of 4.5 seconds set by Clint Weston and Tyler Paicu was just fast enough for them to claim the arena record and collect the bounty money. Now it will start to grow year after year until the record is broken once again.
